Caring for botanical textiles

General guidance for keeping naturally printed fabrics beautiful for longer.

1 min read

Plant-printed textiles are made with natural colour, and natural colour asks for a little care. These are general guidelines for eco-printed and naturally dyed fabrics.

Washing

  • Wash only when needed, by hand, in cool water.
  • Use a mild, pH-neutral soap. Avoid bleach, optical brighteners and strong detergents.
  • Don't soak for long, and don't wring. Press the water out gently in a towel.

Drying and light

  • Dry flat, or hang in the shade.
  • Avoid long periods in strong direct sunlight, which can fade natural colour over time.
  • For textiles on display, choose a spot away from direct sun.

Ironing

  • Iron on the reverse, at a low to medium setting suited to the fabric.

Storing

  • Store clean and completely dry, folded or rolled, away from light and damp.
  • Breathable cotton bags or acid-free tissue are kinder than plastic.

Living with natural colour

Over time, natural colours may soften and mellow. Many people come to love this: the cloth keeps changing, quietly, the way leaves do.

This guide shares general information about eco-printing. Methods vary from artist to artist.
